{Chicago Children and Family Photography}: The M's

I must say this. The families I’ve had the opportunity to photograph thus far have been awesome. The majority of my sessions have been cold and breezy, but yet they are just excited to get photographs taken so they endure through the cold. The M’s were no different.

Last Sunday, after we had to reschedule our session from the day before due to rain, we were able to meet up at Mills Park in Oak Park. What a nice (and gorgeous may I add) couple, and what a beautiful baby girl they have! Lilah was totally into the picture taking, she had plenty of smiles to offer and was super engaging with the camera. I definitely got lucky with this one. And I’m happy to declare that it’s one of my favorite sessions yet.

I think you’ll see why.

Shoots like these remind me of why I love what I’m doing. Just looking at the finished product puts a smile on my face.

{Chicago Children and Family Photography}: The S Family

The bluest eyes. That’s what I think about when I think back to my shoot with the S Family two weeks ago. Their little girl had the bluest eyes I have ever seen and a smile and adorable outfit to top it off.

Thanks to the S family for allowing me the opportunity to photograph your family!

Aspirations Session with Jenna Cole Photography

I read a lot of photography forums. A lot. And I’ve noticed one of the most asked questions on those forums come from people similar to me: “What advice do you have for an aspiring photographer who is very new to photography?”

 There are usually two answers:

  1. Shoot, shoot, and shoot some more.
  2. Learn, learn, and learn some more, whether it be through books, workshops, networking, blogs, etc.

There truly is such an abundance of information out there when it comes to photography. It’s actually rather overwhelming. But one thing that I’ve found over the past year or so is that I’m very much a visual learner, and I like to be able to ask questions in a one-on-one situation.

Well, lucky me. I got to do just that last Friday when I met up with Jenna from Jenna Cole Photography for an Aspirations Session.  In these sessions, Jenna teaches what she knows about anything you want to know about photography, from the basics to more advanced concepts. This session was completely customized to what I wanted to learn (which was primarily centered around composition and lighting, two things I seem to struggle with). She was more than willing to answer any questions I had along the way, which I so appreciated. I even got to take a couple shots with her 5DMkII. Me wants one.

Without going on and on and on, I just thought I’d share what I wrote to Jenna about why I would recommend a session like this to others:

“There are so many workshops, online tutorials, and other resources out there all claiming to make you a better photographer. However, the majority of these options don’t allow for one-on-one interaction that’s catered to what you want to learn and don’t dedicate time to answer your specific questions. Going into the Aspirations Session, I had a good understanding of the basics of photography, but there were some things, that no matter how much I read or watched online, I just couldn’t grasp. There’s nothing like talking to a pro in person and watching them in action. In my few hours with Jenna, I took away quite a few things, things that I could immediately apply to my next shoot. Just two days later, I had a shoot, and Jenna’s voice was in my head reminding me of things: don’t cut off limbs, do the funny laugh, look for good light not good backgrounds…It was undoubtedly a worthwhile investment. I still have a long ways to go, but I’m definitely closer to where I want to be after the Aspirations Session.”

If you live in the Chicago area and are interested in learning more about photography, definitely get in touch with Jenna. You won’t regret it! If you don’t live in Chicago, check local photographer’s websites to see if they offer something similar. The one-one-one, in-person interaction can’t be beat!

{Chicago Family Photography}: The K's

The weather in Chicago has been quite wacky I must say. It’s been in the 60s one day, and the next day the highs are in the 40s. It has definitely made it a bit of a challenge to photograph families without looking like they are freezing (which they are a lot of the time). But we make it work.

Last Saturday was one of those days. The K’s met up with  me at Caldwell Woods to do a quick family session.  The wind was blowing, jackets were needed, but they hung in there. Megan and Max were full of energy, which was a good thing since a bit of running around warmed them up. I really enjoyed working with this family, and hope to do so again in the future.

Here are a couple from the session that I love.

Thanks to the K’s for the opportunity to photograph your family and for sticking through it even though the weather was quite chilly!

I Smell a Christmas Card…

Looking back over the past five years, it’s funny to think back to where I thought I’d be at this time. Five years ago, I was finishing up my senior year at Cornell University in Upstate New York. I was applying to graduate programs and daydreaming about the life ahead of me.

Fast forward to now. Things certainly aren’t the way I had dreamt them to be. But that’s not to say it’s a bad thing! In many, many ways life is better than what I had imagined. For instance, little did I think that I’d be living in Chicago in a house with my husband and a dog. Little did I know that I’d be pursuing photography while working a full-time job in healthcare.

Little did I know that I’d be living a mere six blocks away from my older brother (and his wife) in a city that is not our hometown. Little did I know that I would be photographing them for their Christmas card. And that’s just what I did last Friday in a quick mini session with my brother and his wife (and dog and little one on the way)

I’d say it was a success. I can smell a Christmas card a-brewin’!
